FCC Opens Comment Window for Tenant Internet Access Probe

The comment period for a Federal Communications Commission investigation into exclusive deals between landlords and internet service providers launched Monday.

The commission’s Wireline Competition Bureau said it is seeking to update the record on issues raised in a 2019 notice of proposed rulemaking, including revenue sharing agreements, exclusive wiring arrangements, and exclusive marketing arrangements.

President Joe Biden in a July 9 executive order on competition revived the issue, calling on the FCC to end the exclusive deals that limit tenants’ choices. Critics say the lack of choice results in higher prices for tenants.
