FCC Delays 5G Airwaves Auction a Month, Citing Coronavirus

March 25, 2020, 5:04 PM UTC

The Federal Communications Commission is delaying an auction of 5G-friendly airwaves to July 23 and indefinitely postponing a separate auction for FM broadcast licenses because of the new coronvairus pandemic.

The airwaves auction, which had been scheduled for June 25, is an opportunity for wireless carriers including Verizon Communications inc. to acquire licenses for mid-band spectrum, which is ideal for 5G because it can carry large amounts of data over long distances.

The auction of FM licenses had been scheduled to begin on April 28.
