Facebook Robocall Fight Is Justices’ Chance to Define Autodialer (1)

A U.S. Supreme Court case involving unwanted texts from Facebook Inc. gives the justices a chance to settle the definition of an autodialer under a federal anti-robocall law.

The case set to be argued before the court Tuesday, Facebook Inc. v. Duguid, involves whether dialing a number from a database counts as a violation of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act’s prohibition against automatic telephone dialing systems.

Circuit courts have split over how broadly to define an autodialer under the TCPA. Some have included database dialing, while others limit the definition to randomly dialed calls.
