EU Commission Bans Huawei, ZTE Equipment From Its Procurement

European Commission will in the future no longer procure connectivity services that rely on equipment from Huawei and ZTE, Commissioner Thierry Breton says.

• Urges other EU institutions to follow suit
• Says EU members’ implementation of Cybersecurity toolbox progressing too slowly
• “We will also take into account the toolbox and the assessment in the report when allocating EU funding throughout our programmes,” Breton says
• EU executive considers that Huawei and ZTE represent in fact materially higher risks than other 5G suppliers, according to commission statement
