Earth ‘Digital Twin’ Project Has $2 Million Price Tag—For Now

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced plans to release a broad agency announcement shortly calling for proposals that use cutting-edge data processing and artificial intelligence to create a “digital twin” of Earth.

Funding for the limited demonstration project is small, currently estimated by NOAA at up to $2 million. A validated and adopted implementation of the virtual model could eventually see widespread use by NOAA and other agencies seeking a systematic approach to understanding the environmental and climate impacts of a wide range of government, commercial, and private sector activities.
