Dish Gets $42 Million Default Win in Ukraine Server Piracy Case

Dish Network LLC won a default judgment and $42 million award against a Ukrainian company it alleged openly promoted use of its servers by pirate streaming services.

Virtual Systems LLC and CEO Vyacheslav Smyrnov never responded to the copyright lawsuit to contest claims against them, according to an opinion issued Wednesday by the US District Court for the Western District of Washington. Dish said the foreign company openly advertises that it doesn’t comply with US copyright law or require customers to, and has failed to respond to hundreds of takedown notices.
