Democrats Urge FTC to Police Tech Company Teen Privacy Pledges

The Federal Trade Commission should scrutinize how tech companies are following their new policies for protecting young users online, according to three Democratic lawmakers.

The lawmakers’ call comes after tech companies including TikTok, Alphabet Inc., and Facebook Inc. recently tightened their privacy controls for teenagers, likely in response to policy pressure from the U.K.

These policy changes represent “an important step towards making the internet safer for young users,” Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Reps. Kathy Castor (D-Fla.) and Lori Trahan (D-Mass.) wrote in a Friday letter to FTC chair Lina Khan.
