Connected Device Makers Face California, Oregon Security Laws

The makers of smart microwaves, refrigerators, light bulbs, and billions of other connected devices must make their products more secure—the better to withstand hacking attempts, malware, and other cyberthreats—come next year in California and Oregon.

Internet of Things: The two states are the first in the U.S. to specifically regulate internet of things device security, with new laws taking effect Jan. 1. Privacy and tech attorneys say other states are likely to follow, but that means manufacturers may end up facing a patchwork of differing security requirements from state-to-state.
