Commerce Department Calls for Sweeping Audits of AI Models

A US Commerce Department agency called for sweeping audits of artificial intelligence models and urged the federal government to impose “consequences” for companies “imposing unacceptable risks or making unfounded claims.”

The recommendations from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) were part of an AI accountability report released Wednesday by the agency, which was directed to spearhead the effort to establish a policy on open-source AI under last year’s executive order on AI from President Joe Biden.
