Cicilline Drafting Bill to Tackle False Ads on Online Platforms

Democratic Rep. David Cicilline is drafting legislation to take away a broad tech liability protection for online platforms that knowingly publish “demonstrably false” political ads, he says at a National Association of Broadcasters’ event.

  • Bill would be introduced within approximately a month, says Cicilline, chairman of the House Judiciary Cmte’s antitrust subcmte
    • Subcmte is also undertaking antitrust investigation into large tech platforms, including Google, Facebook, Apple, and Amazon
  • NOTE: Rep. Jan Schakowsky is also drafting bill to address Section 230 liability immunity, which applies to third party content on tech platforms, over concerns about election misinformation
