Canadian Wireless Firm Will Refund C$5.42 Million in Messaging Charges

Canadian telecommunications giant Rogers Communications Inc. has agreed to refund customers an estimated C$5.42 million ($4.23 million) in “premium text messaging” charges, according to a settlement negotiated with the Competition Bureau.

The agreement resulted from an investigation of Rogers, Bell Canada, Telus Communications Corp. and the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association. The probe concluded that Rogers made, or permitted to be made, false or misleading representations to customers in advertisements for premium text messages in pop-up ads, applications and social media, the agency said March 16 in a statement.
