Chatbots capable of relationships with users will face new requirements, such as notifications that the software isn’t a human, under legislation signed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Monday.
The measure (SB 243), which would place some of the nation’s first rules on chatbots, requires operators to maintain and publish a protocol for preventing suicidal content from being presented to the user. If the company knows the user is a minor, it has to provide additional notifications and take steps to limit sexually explicit content under the bill sponsored by Sen. Steve Padilla (D).
