Biotech Eyed as Key National Security Capability in Defense Law

Congress and the Pentagon are investing in the emerging biotechnology field as a critical driver of national security under the annual defense policy legislation President Donald Trump signed in December.

Biotechnology—the design and engineering of biological systems—is the “next battlefield” in the competition between the US and China, according to a commission set up by Congress to advance the US’s capability in the field.

Coupled with artificial intelligence, biotech will transform everything from national defense to how Americans eat and receive care, according to the National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology.
