Australia will impose new penalties against tech giants who fail to pay local news organizations for their journalism, the latest move by Canberra to tackle the rising power of global social media companies.

The Australian government will force companies such as Meta and Google to negotiate with local journalists to reimburse them for using their content on their websites. If they fail to enter into agreements with Australian media companies, the government will impose penalties on them, higher than what they would have paid journalists.
