The Third Circuit on Tuesday weighed a Pennsylvania mother’s standing in her challenge of a school district policy limiting parental notification of a student’s gender transition unless a parent was involved in the process.
The Pine-Richland School District has a policy for school personnel to ascertain whether and how a parent is involved with a student’s gender transition before discussing that information with their parents. If parents aren’t involved in the process, discussing a transition with them “carries risks for the student, such as physical and/or emotional abuse, abandonment, and/or removal from the home,” the policy says.
