Texas Bill Limiting Teaching on Race on Track to Governor’s Desk

May 29, 2021, 5:30 AM UTC

The Texas Senate voted late Friday to revive a bill placing restrictions on how public school teachers handle classroom discussions of current events, race, and racism. The move placed the bill on track for the governor’s desk amid objections from Democrats calling into question the vote’s legality.

The late-night vote followed a procedural violation issue raised by Democrats who questioned the relevancy of Senate amendments attached to the bill (H.B. 3979). House Speaker Dade Phelan (R) sustained the point of order and sent the bill back to the Senate, seemingly blocking its final passage.
