Nike Shopper Seeks to Revive Bias Claims Over Alleged Profiling

Former athlete Joel Stallworth asked a federal judge in California to revive federal civil rights claims against Nike Retail Services Inc. and a Santa Monica store manager in an amended complaint alleging that an agreement between the retail store and the local police resulted in Stallworth being illegally detained.

Stallworth and his wife TaMiya Dickerson alleged a store manager with a history of racist behavior confronted their family on the crowded street in front of a Nike store, accusing them of stealing a child’s basketball. Three armed police officers detained Stallworth until he produced the receipt for the toy.
