New Jersey will ban employers from using mandatory meetings to discourage their workers from joining a labor union, under legislation signed by Gov. Phil Murphy (D) that appears a prime target for legal challenges.
The measure (A 4429) approved by the governor Sept. 3 expands the state’s existing restrictions on workplace captive audience meetings related to political and religious matters to also cover discussions of employees’ choice to unionize. The state joins at least 10 others that have banned employers from firing or penalizing workers who refuse to attend meetings covering restricted topics.
