N.Y. Cops to Face Tougher Hiring Rules Under State Bar Proposal

Police officers in New York should be required to hold college degrees, liability insurance, and professional licenses, the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) proposed in a sweeping report the group released Monday to push a “21st Century approach” to policing in the state.

The recommendations for more stringent hiring standards are included in the 114-page report from the group’s Task Force on Racial Injustice and Police Reform, which was created in June 2020 after the killing of George Floyd to review the state’s law enforcement practices and propose changes.
