Miami Redistricting Paused During Racial Gerrymandering Suit

Miami’s new electoral district map is on hold pending accusations the city committed racial gerrymandering, a federal court said.

Several civil rights groups and leaders accused the city of sorting residents in a manner that created separate majority-Black, majority-Hispanic, and majority-White city commission districts, elevating race above all other considerations in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment, and to the detriment of American Indian, Pacific Islander, and Asian American residents. A US District Court for the Southern District of Florida magistrate judge recommended granting the plaintiffs’ request for a preliminary injunction against the planned redistricting while the case proceeds.
