More schools would be eligible to serve all students free lunch under a proposed rule change the Agriculture Department announced Wednesday.
The move to extend free school meals to more low-income kids comes after the Biden administration’s push for universal school lunches last September. Offering free lunch at school to every child regardless of income lacks the GOP votes needed for approval by Congress, but the USDA has pledged to make smaller changes within its authority to stretch free school meals as far as they can go under current law.
