The number of kids relying on a federal food assistance program jumped almost 9% in the past two years, an advocacy group found, as families took advantage of pandemic-era flexibilities.
The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, better known as WIC, is one of the largest federal nutrition programs in America, with more than 6 million participants. The food aid is geared toward low-income pregnant people, babies, and children up to 5 years old who have risks such as food allergies or chronic illness.
