Disparities Linger as Majority of Elementary Schools Open Doors

A majority of K-8 schools are offering at least some in-person instruction, with classroom reopenings varying widely between student groups and locations, a federal survey finds.

Most schools still don’t teach in person full time. More than a majority of fourth-graders— some 60% — and 68% of eighth graders still attend class online for at least part of the week.

Remote learning is also higher for Black, Latino, and Asian students than their White peers. Urban schools report lower rates of in-person teaching than rural schools, the Education Department reports.
