House Democrats’ signature bill in response to the killing of George Floyd and other Black Americans would cost police departments around the country hundreds of millions of dollars to report law enforcement data to federal officials, congressional economists estimate.

Under the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2021 (H.R. 1280), about 18,000 law enforcement agencies would see costs increase by “several hundred million dollars annually,” the Congressional Budget Office wrote in a letter dated March 9 to lawmakers.
