Cornell, Northwestern Hit With $1.8 Billion Funding Freeze (1)

The White House broadened its fight with elite universities by freezing federal grants for Cornell and Northwestern, following similar moves against Columbia and Princeton.

The administration paused $1.05 billion to Cornell and $790 million to Northwestern because of potential civil rights violations, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.

Cornell said that the Department of Defense had sent 75 stop-work orders on Tuesday, but the school hasn’t received information to confirm the $1 billion figure. Northwestern responded that it also hasn’t received official notification from the government.
