Florida’s political leaders are using the mob attack on the U.S. Capitol to justify fast-tracking legislation to limit protests and make it harder to reduce law enforcement budgets—something Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis initially proposed following last year’s demonstrations against police killing unarmed people.
“You can have strong views, you can be disappointed in an election, you can be disappointed in whatever, but you can’t just go in and ransack public places like that,” DeSantis told reporters Thursday. “I hope maybe now we’ll get even more support for my legislation because it’s something that needs to be done.”
