US Border Encounters Drop Sharply Under New Immigration Policies

The number of migrants apprehended at the southern border dropped last month after the Biden administration opened some new legal pathways to the US and expanded enforcement against those who try to cross without authorization.

The US Border Patrol apprehended about 128,000 migrants between legal ports of entry in January, a more than 40% decrease from the previous month and the lowest in two years. Overall US Customs and Border Protection encounters, which include crossings at ports, clocked in around 156,000, down from more than 250,000 in December.
