Sibanye Free of Investor Suit Over Gold Mine Safety Statements

Sibanye Gold Ltd. successfully fought off a would-be class suit alleging it misled investors about safety conditions and worker fatalities in its South African mines after a federal judge in New York dismissed the case Tuesday.

South Africa’s post-apartheid government implemented safety laws and worker protections to defend mostly Black miners, who were historically treated as expendable by mine owners. Sibanye investors failed to properly allege that the company misled them about a safety program it put in place in 2016, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York said.
