EU Lawmakers Seek Curbs on Financial Investors in Carbon Market

A group of European Parliament lawmakers proposed curbing the role of speculative investors in the EU’s carbon market, where prices have soared to record levels amid the energy crunch and prospects for stricter climate policies.

The nine lawmakers, who belong to the European People’s Party, the biggest political group in the assembly, tabled an amendment to a reform of the EU Emissions Trading System, according to a document seen by Bloomberg News. It would limit access to the ETS to emitters covered by the program and financial intermediaries purchasing allowances on behalf of polluters.
