Congress Mulls CFTC Crypto Role as Lawyers Predict Light Touch

Crypto legislation advancing in Congress would put the CFTC in charge of protecting investors from fraudulent schemes involving memecoins and other digital assets, leading some critics to question whether the regulator has the resources or political will to crack down on the industry.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission stands to take on a significant role policing the spot market for digital assets, including risky tokens tied to celebrities and internet memes, under legislation the Senate Agriculture Committee approved last week.
