Worker Heat Stress Prevention Rule Gains Momentum in Maryland

Workers in Maryland could soon gain protections from heat stress under a proposed rule now being reviewed at the state’s Division of Labor and Industry.

If the rule is enacted, Maryland would be the first East Coast state to have a heat protection standard, joining California, Minnesota, Oregon, and Washington.

The state’s labor agency hasn’t set a deadline for the rule to go into effect, but is taking public comments through March 15. The rulemaking is at the behest of the state legislature, which in 2020 passed a bill calling for a heat regulation. The state missed the ...
