USDA Faces Mounting Suits Over Meat Processing Speed Waivers

The Agriculture Department is facing another lawsuit over its 2018 decision to increase chicken slaughter line speeds by 25%—this time brought by a food workers union and several locals.

The United Food and Commercial Workers union and five local labor unions claim the USDA and its Food Safety and Inspection Service violated the Administrative Procedure Act rulemaking procedures when they adopted a program for poultry processors to apply for and be granted line speed increases. The waivers enable poultry plants to exceed the normal maximum of 140 birds per minute.
