In the wake of a storage tank chemical fire near Houston that took three days to extinguish, a federal safety panel is recommending that storage terminals have flammable gas detection systems.
In a report released Thursday, the US Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board concluded that the March 2019 fire at Intercontinental Terminals Co. in Deer Park, Texas, began when butane-enriched naphtha vapor leaked from a circulation pump and ignited about 30 minutes later.
The board said Intercontinental Terminals didn’t have a flammable gas detection system that would have alerted operators of the danger.
