Texas Contractor Fined $371,000 for Alleged Safety Violations

A Houston-based recycled glass company has been cited with nine serious, one willful, and three repeat worker safety violations and faces proposed penalties of $370,995 following an inspection, the Labor Department announced Wednesday.

Strategic Materials Inc. allegedly willfully and repeatedly exposed its workers to falls, electrical hazards, and amputations, Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigators found.

The company has been cited for failure to have lockout procedures in place, allowing unguarded projecting shaft ends, and failure to enclose sprocket wheels and chains, the agency said.
