The National Academies’ Institute of Medicine will set up a committee to make recommendations to the Department of Veterans Affairs about setting up a registry of veterans affected by exposure to chemicals from burn pits overseas.
The institute said on its website that the new committee, required under the Dignified Burial and Other Veterans’ Benefits Improvement Act of 2012, would determine how best to collect, maintain and monitor information on the impacts of burn pits.
