Ramp Up Inspections, Silica Rule, AFL-CIO Tells Safety Agencies

OSHA needs to change its inspection priorities to better protect workers from growing threats to their health, AFL-CIO labor federation officials said Tuesday.

Every day, 340 people die because of hazardous working conditions, said AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler as the union issued its annual Death on the Job report, a summary and analysis of workplace safety and health data.

“Job safety, we believe, is a fundamental human right,” Shuler said during a news conference. “Unfortunately, as this year’s Death on the Job report will show, worker injuries and deaths are still far too common.”
