Proposed amendments to British Columbia’s Workers Compensation Act (Bill 9) would allow for tougher workplace enforcement and could go as far as banning employers from operating in the province in the cases of egregious noncompliance, according to Shirley Bond, minister of jobs, tourism and skills training and minister responsible for labor.
“The changes will provide WorkSafe with more options in terms of their abilities to deal with consequences to employers who do not take worker safety as significantly as they could,” Bond told a Feb. 11 news conference. WorkSafeBC is the Workers’ Compensation Board of British Columbia.
