OSHA Issues Interim Guidance for Fit-Testing Powered Respirators

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is making it easier for health-care providers and other employers where exposure to the coronavirus is a high risk to use tight-fitting powered air-purifying respirators.

The respirators cover the entire faces and typically use a miniature electric fan to pump in breathable air.

The agency Friday issued interim guidance to inspectors that when it’s not possible for an employer to comply with annual fit-testing requirements, OSHA field offices will exercise enforcement discretion as long as the employer has complied with all other applicable requirements of the agency’s respiratory protection standard.
