New York Law Boosts Criminal Worker Safety Fines for Employers

Fines for New York employers convicted of state criminal charges for the death or injury of a worker could skyrocket under a bill (S621B) signed into law Friday by Gov. Kathy Hochul (D).

The range of fines allowed for felony convictions will increase from a maximum of $10,000 to $500,000. Misdemeanor fines, meanwhile, will rise from a maximum of $5,000 to $500,000. The new provisions will take effect in 30 days.

“Construction workers are the engine that keep our economy moving, and they deserve strong protections under the law,” Hochul said.
