Most US mine operators will be required to develop written safety programs to protect workers from being struck by vehicles and other mobile equipment operating above ground, MSHA announced Tuesday in the Federal Register.
The new rule—Safety Program for Surface Mobile Equipment—takes effect Jan. 19, but mine operators will have until July to develop and implement their programs, according to the US Mine Safety and Health Administration.
The rule requires mine operators to identify and review information about hazards at their mines. The information can include accident data, information on close calls or near misses, and equipment maintenance accidents.
