Military Must Assess Health Impacts of Burn Pits: Audit

The Defense Department has known for more than 30 years that open-air burn pits pose potential health risks, but must do more to help veterans exposed to harmful pollutants at the sites, the Government Accountability Office said Sept. 26.

The report evaluated the Pentagon’s compliance with a congressional mandate to review the issue.
