Meat-Processing Covid-19 Guidance Includes Distancing, Barriers

Meat and poultry processors should allow workers to follow basic preventative measures such as maintaining 6 feet between people and frequent hand washing, federal workplace health regulators are advising in their first guidance specifically for the industry.

The recommendations from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention arrived Sunday, after some plants became hot spots for Covid-19 cases.

The workers’ “environments—processing lines and other areas in busy plants where they have close contact with coworkers and supervisors—may contribute substantially to their potential exposures,” the joint guidance said.
