Health-Care Employers Must Comply With OSHA Virus Rule by July 6

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Covid-19 emergency temporary standard for health-care employers took effect Monday, giving qualifying providers until July 6 to comply with most provisions.

The agency’s long-awaited Covid-19 emergency temporary standard was published Monday in the Federal Register and listed the standard’s compliance deadlines for health-care providers.

Employers must comply with most provisions, such as developing an infection prevention program and creating a log of new virus cases, by July 6. Other mandates, such as worker training, and those that could require physical changes to workspaces and buildings, such as erecting physical barriers, have a July 21 compliance deadline.

The agency released the standard’s text and compliance guidance on June 10, following a six-week review by the White House’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs that included dozens of meetings with health, business, and worker-advocacy groups.

The standard applies only to health-care employers whose workers may come in contact with infected people as part of their duties.
