Fatal Grain Explosion Lands Largest Fine in Wisconsin History

A Wisconsin milling company faces $1.8 million in proposed fines—the largest amount ever against a firm in the state—for federal worker safety violations following a May 31 explosion that killed five workers and injured 12 others.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration Nov. 17 issued a citation to Cambria, Wis.-based Didion Milling Inc. that alleges the corn-product producer failed to prevent the accumulation of highly combustible grain dust throughout its facility. It also asserted the company failed to maintain appropriate controls for grain ignition sources.
