The Department of Labor’s Office of Inspector General is launching a new inquiry into the federal government’s capability to respond to mine emergencies.
In a Nov. 24 letter to the Mine Safety and Health Administration, an agency within the DOL, the inspector general said the audit aims to look at the mine agency’s responses to emergencies and its preparedness for future emergencies.
The letter didn’t cite specific mine disasters the watchdog would look at. The last large-scale mining catastrophe was the April 2010 Upper Big Branch coal mine explosion that took the lives of 29 miners.
