Caterpillar Faces $145,000 Fine After Employee Falls to Death

Caterpillar Inc. has been hit with proposed fines of $145,027 and cited for one willful safety violation after a worker at a company foundry suffered a fatal 11-foot fall into a pot of molten iron in June.

The Department of Labor’s Occupation Safety and Health Administration announced the penalties Wednesday following an investigation of the Mapleton, Illinois foundry, which it found lacked proper fall protection and safety guards.

The company has routinely exposed workers to fall hazards as they work within four feet of deep ceramic containers of super-heated molten iron, the DOL said.
