Amputations, Injuries Should Spur More Safety Agency Checks

Employers reporting amputations and other serious injuries to federal safety regulators could face more inspections if the recommendations in a new Labor Department inspector general report are carried out.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration should have inspected hundreds more employers who notified the agency of workers being hospitalized or suffering injuries covered by an OSHA emphasis program, such the one on preventing amputations, Elliott Lewis, the assistant inspector general for audit, said in the report released Sept. 18.
