Amazon.com Inc. faces a flurry of upcoming legal hearings as the online retailer defends its worker safety practices in federal and state courts.

The outcome of the hearings could, in part, determine whether the company will be ordered to reconfigure its distribution centers—changes that could cost millions of dollars—and rethink how workers go about handling packages.
