It’s one of the most common types of workplace injuries and one of the least cited—the strains, sprains, tears, and contusions from muscle and joint stress.
The injuries are collectively known as musculoskeletal disorders—MSD for short. For each year from 2016 through 2020 there were about 270,000 on-the-job cases serious enough for a worker to miss at least a day from their normal duties, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
