Yamaha, FCA Get Crash Suits Nixed on Vehicles Sold Elsewhere (1)

Yamaha Motor Corp. U.S.A.'s motorcycle sales and marketing activity in South Carolina weren’t tied closely enough to a woman’s product liability claims to support jurisdiction in the state, a federal court there said.

Niya Wallace’s suit stemmed from an accident in Florida while she was riding a Yamaha YZF R6 motorcycle initially sold in Kansas and later brought to South Carolina.

The claims don’t “arise from or relate to” Yamaha’s contacts in South Carolina, the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina said Nov. 20 in dismissing the suit.
